Swedish Flower Hen chickens were imported to the US for the first time in 2010 and are quickly becoming a very popular breed thanks to their confident and friendly demeanor, their efficient foraging habits and their many color varieties. No two birds look alike and they will come in black, blue or white based and either be mottled, mille fleur, “splash” or snowleopard patterned. They will also have their namesake’s white speckled feathers, otherwise known as their flowering. SFH rooster are known to be gentle and friendly. Despite their growing popularity, the breed is still rare and considered to be endangered.

Swedish flower hens emerged as a landrace several hundred years ago, the product of a now forgotten mix of primitive breeds that were brought to Sweden by settlers and conquerors. As a landrace, this breed was not intentionally created by a breeder carefully selecting birds as part of a structured breeding program. Rather, this breed was created through natural selection and random pairings as the breed adapted to the climate and conditions of the Sydskanska Plain in southern Sweden. This landrace breed results in a hearty dual purpose bird that is highly disease resistant and tolerant of cold and warm temperatures alike. They lay large, cream colored eggs and plenty of them! Pullets will start laying around 5-6 months old.

Please text or call with any questions whatsoever. I don’t check my email very often, but feel free to send a message there, as well and I will respond within 2 weeks.
