Volunteering In Hospice

Hospice is a special kind of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families in the final stages of a terminal illness. This care seeks to enable patients to carry on their remaining days in an alert and pain free manner, with symptoms under control and their last days may be spent with dignity at home or in a home like setting.

What volunteers do:
Volunteers can listen, talk with them, hold their hand, read to them, comfort a family member, help with light yard work, run errands, or give family members a break from the rigors of care giving.

Volunteers and Families:
Volunteers are indispensable in helping families cope. In some cases, patients are more comfortable speaking about dying with a volunteer trained to listen than to their own families.

Remember your presence and enthusiasm can make the difference in how a dying person approaches what could be the most frightening experience in his or her life. You have a chance to help not only the terminally ill but their families as well.

For volunteer opportunities contact Guardian's volunteer coordinator at guardianvolunteers@yahoo.com or by calling 208-461-1600 and asking for Anne. You CAN make a difference!

We are a non-profit organization that works with at-risk youth in helping them to plan for and begin their careers. Our vision is to empower youth with the ability to create their own destiny, unencumbered by the limitations of their current situation.

Most of the youth we work with are foster youth transitioning to independent living. When foster youth turn 18 they must find their own housing and begin self-support, even if they are still in high school. We support these youth in developing the tools they need to obtain and maintain employment, preferably entry jobs in their career of choice. We help them to experience successes along the way that show them that their dreams are attainable.

We have had a positive impact on the youth we work with and have letters of support from Health and Welfare and Casey Family Programs and could surely get more. Budget cuts and a lack of fundraising experience are making this a really tough time for our program.

We are looking for a fundraiser who can start as a volunteer with the possibility of earning bonuses, and/or eventually a salary.

You can view our website at www.manajobs.com. Thank you!

Type 1 Diabetes. Help us prevent it (Boise)

Type 1-Diabetes:
Help us find out how it happens. Help us prevent it.

The TrialNet Natural History Study is being conducted to learn what causes type 1-diabetes and how to prevent it from developing. For reasons unknown, our immune systems will launch an attack on the insulin producing cells in our pancreas. Byproducts of this attack are cells called autoantibodies. These are cells that tell us our immune system has gone awry.

Here’s where you can help:

If you are a close relative of a person with type 1-diabetes enroll in the TrialNet Natural History Study and help research understand the disease process to help lead to a prevention. It’s only through research that these answers will be found.

There are three phases to this clinical trial:

• The first is the natural history study. This is for the close relatives of a type 1-diabetes person. This phase involves a blood draw from your arm that will be tested for the autoantibodies and information about your relative’s type 1-diabetes history will be gathered.

• The second is the base-line risk assessment. If you test positive for the autoantibodies, your blood sugar and insulin levels will be closely monitored to estimate the chances of type 1-diabetes developing within the next five years.

• The third is the follow-Up Risk Assessment. This phase involves a continuation of the testing in the base-line assessment arm. The purpose of this study is to monitor the development of the disease and gather clinical information.

Who can participate in the study?

• People aged 1 to 45 and have a brother, sister, child, or parent with type 1 diabetes,

• People aged 1 to 20 and have a cousin, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, half-sibling, or Grandparent with type 1-diabetes.

Hospice Volunteers--Making each day count. What is hospice? Today's hospices have goals to ease the physical and emotional pain of terminally ill patients. Hospices depend on volunteers, they are special people, they are caring, emotionally mature, committed, and comfortable talking about death and dying. Volunteers get plenty of support and training from the hospice staff. Volunteering is rewarding in many ways like greater self knowledge and satisfaction. Duties vary: keep the patient company, listen to concerns, be a support person, light housekeeping, run errands, etc. Most volunteers give 1 - 3 hrs a week and are able set their own schedule.

Urgent - Host Families needed (Idaho)

Host families are urgently needed for many other foreign exchange students. They come from Germany, France, Switzerland and South Korea and are eager to share their culture with us and learn about life in America. Foreign students are looking to become part of your family for one semester or full academic school year while they attend a local high school during the 2009/2010 school year. All our students have been carefully screened and speak English well enough to handle their high school work. They are covered by medical insurance and have their own spending money. They will arrive in August, for the school year.

Host families provide room and board for the exchange student. The student pays for all other expenses with his or her own pocket money. The family can deduct $50 per month, as a charitable contribution, for income tax purposes during the time that the student is in their home. Students come prepared to live by the host family rules and to adapt to their lifestyles. Most of our host families are busy families, but this provides an interesting environment for our students.

Host families open up their hearts and their home to a young person from another country and are rewarded with a rich, memorable experience for everyone involved. If you would like to apply, please call me or visit http://guystephensonemf.weebly.com/ for more information as soon as possible, so that we can meet with you and find a perfect match for your family.

*HOST AN INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENT!!
Open your heart, your mind, and your home to an International High School student for one school year. This has proven to be the best tool of diplomacy and bridge building between nations.

We are gearing up for our placement season for the 2007-2008 students who arrive in August and need as much help as we can get to get all these kids into homes.

After celebrating our sixtieth year in international education as a non-profit organization, CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange remains highly committed to our mission: "To help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world."

Each student in our program is individually interviewed to ensure that they have the appropriate maturity level to be a successful participant in our program. We require a "C+" average to be accepted and we also require our students maintain this minimum grade average throughout their stay (allowing for a short adjustment period).

Students have taken an English proficiency test to prove their ability to be academically successful while attending an American high school. Tutoring will be provided for a struggling student.

CIEE strongly believes that by volunteering their time to community service, our students will become more involved in the American way of life. Therefore, we require that they participate in a "Community Service Project" (8 hours per semester) to ensure that they reciprocate the exchange and benefits to their host family, school, and their community.

Students are between 15-18 years old, have their own medical insurance, and spending money. There is no better time than NOW to learn more about our neighbors in the world!!

Why Host?

* Introduce the heart of America
* Unite our future leaders
* Strengthen mutual understanding
* Gain new insights and appreciation for different cultures
* Affect attitudes over lifetimes

Please help us make a difference in the world! If unable to host a student and know someone who can, call to find out about our referral bonus.

For more information and to participate in this rewarding intercultural experience please contact your Local High School Coordinator- Tanya Soler at (208)793-0110 or by replying to this ad.

Hello! I’m currently a graduate student at the University of Rochester working on my dissertation in psychology. In an attempt to get a sample of participants from across the US, I’m seeking volunteers via Craigslist who are currently in a romantic relationship (however you define this) to participate in an online survey (see link below). The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete and you will be asked questions about yourself, your relationship, and how you might react to a hypothetical situation with your romantic partner. All participants will be entered into a lottery for a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards to www.amazon.com (you will be asked to provide your email address in order to be entered into the lottery).

All responses will be confidential and email addresses will not be stored with the data. This study has been approved by the Research Subject Review Board at the University of Rochester. If you have any questions, my contact information is on the first page of the survey or you may send me an email via Craigslist.

Thanks in advance for your help! Here is the link to the survey:

Soroptimist International of Garden City is looking for a volunteer or two to make balloon animals or hats, etc. for the kids of Garden City. No professional experience needed... just a willingness to put some smiles on the faces of these kids! We have one other volunteer already, so you won't be on your own. The party is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, at the Boys and Girls Club in Garden City. We provide the balloons; you just show up and work your magic. See more info on our Children's Holiday Party below or at http://www.gardencitysoroptimist.org/HolidayParty.htm

Soroptimist International of Garden City is excited to once again host the annual Children's Holiday Party. This will be our 15th such event! We expect to spread holiday cheer to approximately 300 Garden City children this year. The kids will enjoy crafts, music, face painting and karaoke. There will be lots of games as well as refreshments. There will even be a visit from Santa Claus and his elves. Also, every child in attendance will receive a gift bag. Please imagine the happiness on the faces of these children who only know a life less privileged. For many of their families, it's a day-to-day struggle just to obtain the barest of necessities. With your help, we can provide a carefree, fun and safe afternoon to these kids who may otherwise go entirely without this holiday season. The joy on their faces says it all. Please help.
