You can even rent movies at Blockbuster (1 block) and watch them cozied up in front of our gas fireplace. Or, walk 2 blocks to Bruce Willis' "The Mint" nightclub for big-city style disco, live bands, or Bruce himself singing wine-cooler ballads with his band!

Fall in Wallowa County
Fall is upon us, and it is evident in more than one way....if the lack of people coming and going from the lake aren't the first signs that Fall is upon us, then maybe it is the frost bitten plants in my yard??? Regardless of the signs, Fall is here. A lot of people don't like fall and winter, but personally, I love it. Fall in Wallowa County can be best described as cool, crisp evenings, rich and vibrant fall foliage, and the first dusting of snow on our gorgeous mountain peaks that remind you of the definition of each peak and valley of the Wallowa Mountains.
We do have numerous cabins and homes still open and will remain open thru the Fall and Winter months. If you have only been up here during Summer, then you are in for a special treat if you come up during the Fall and Winter months...try and sneak away and see if my description of Wallowa County in the Fall is correct! You won't be sorry!

We walked into the Golden Saddle (#7) and were shocked.............
We found our way to the Golden Saddle with good directions from Cindi....she wasn't kidding when she said that it is almost at the end of the road, and when you think you have gone too far, keep going! But, when we walked into the Golden Saddle, we were shocked! This house is so unbelievably gorgeous! January feels very April-ish
I know in the last blog I said that Winter is finally here, but I think I was fooled! Today, as I look out my office window, I see beautiful blue sky, gorgeous views of the magnificent Wallowa Mountains, and it feels like Spring. I am not sure if the Mushers are that excited about the great weather we are having, or the organizers of Winterfest, but not a lot you can do about Mother Nature!
The floodgates have opened on people looking ahead and making reservations, so if you have been holding off to make your reservation, you better hurry! We are starting to see a lot of reservations, so maybe the economy is taking a turn, and things will start the uphill climb again. Lets hope!

Our stay at Wallowa Lake was unbelievable!! We were all are so glad that we had the chance to stay in the Rams Head Cottage. This cottage is a home that you can call home for yourself. What we liked the most about the Rams Head Cottage is how when you open all the windows your hear all that Wallowa Lake has instore, as well as the flow of the Wallowa River and the great smell of pine. Girls Weekend
I had the opportunity to spend a night up at Wallowa Lake last weekend with some of my best girlfriends that I have known for basically my whole life. What a fantastic weekend we had laughing about the days of high school, discussing our current lives which are wrapped around kids, family, jobs, etc., and where we were headed for in the future with politics, kids growing up, jobs, etc. I think we truly touched on about everything on the spectrum of life, and it occurred to me how truly lucky I am to have these girlfriends in my life.
We stayed at the Ruby Peak Haven home and really got a full appreciation for what a great winter we have had so far! The trip up to the house was easily done in a 4x4 vehicle, and as we climbed up the mountain to the house, we were impressed with the quantity of snow. There has to be 3-4 feet of snow up there! We keep the road and driveway plowed so we always have access to the house, and where the snow has been piled for containment, it is probably 6 feet tall! The trees have a heavy layer of snow on them, and the roof has probably 2 feet of snow on it as well. It truly is a winter wonderland up there!
Our day was spent mostly playing games, eating, enjoying a few cocktails, watching a movie, going for walks, taking pictures, and a quick snowball fight before the ones that started the fight dashed into the house for their protection. The Ruby Peak Haven house fit our needs perfectly! There was plenty of room for all of us to stretch out, but also plenty of sleeping area as well. Each of us had our own bed, and plenty of space to do our own thing.
On the drive home from Wallowa Lake, I thought about how truly fortunate I am. I live in Wallowa County, have a great husband, 2 children that I adore, great family and friends and a job that I truly enjoy. I am blessed. It really was a fantastic weekend!

Loved our stay at cabin #46. What a beautiful cozy well kept cabin. My family and I had so much fun here playing game, doing crafts, and relaxing. We were able to see the gondola running up and down the mountain side, while taking in the views of the river right outside our kitchen window. Mornings were spent drinking coffee on the huge back deck with the visiting deer from time to time. We've stay in many cabins here at Wallowa Lake but none compare to this treasure. We just pack our clothes and food, cuz this cabin is very well stocked. We loved the washer dryer, and dish washer, all the comfort of home. There are so many activities to do, fishing, biking, hiking, miniature golf, and shopping. Don't miss a trip up the gondola the food up on top is great and the view is even better. We will definitely be back to stay again. Many thanks to Wallowa Lake vacation rentals for making our stay so easy and comfortable. Did you catch that article on Matt Walker and the Mule Deer/Cougar ordeal at Wallowa Lake?
The Oregonian had a nice article on Matt and how he cares and loves the deer at Wallowa Lake. I often see Matt out in his yard admiring the deer, and have admired his antler collection that lines the windowsills of his house. You can tell that Matt has a genuine love and admiration for the deer.
As for the article discussing Cougars, this was a little more worrisome. The way they made it sound in the article is that the Cougars roam around as frequently as the people and pets do. This is a possibility, I suppose, but there are a few things that you can do to safeguard your trip and to make your encounter with a Cougar that much more unlikely. Remember...knowledge is power, and these are good tips to have ANYWHERE you go on vacation!

Always keep children nearby and in sight
Cougars are attracted to children. Because of their
small size and high voices, cougars may confuse
them with prey. Never let children wander.
HIKING AND GENERAL AWARENESS
Hike as a group.
Cougars are unlikely to attack a group. Avoid hiking
alone. Reduce the chance of surprising a cougar
Allow a cougar to pick up your scent by keeping the
wind at your back. Make noise to alert
cougars to your presence. Watch for cougar signs.
Stay alert. If you see cougar signs, leave the area.
Tracks, droppings, scratched trees and food caches
are all cougar signs. Cougars also urinate or
defecate on piles of forest debris to mark their
territory. These piles, called scrapes, also indicate
the presence of cougars. Never approach cougar kittens.
In the unlikely event you find cougar kittens, leave
the area immediately. A female cougar will defend
her young.
I have lived here in Wallowa County for 35 years, and have spent a lot of time in the woods. My husband also spends a LOT of time hunting in the woods. Our encounters with Cougars has been very very very rare. Don't let this article scare you off...just educate yourself on prevention.

You can enjoy the 42"flat panel TV/DVD/CD stereo in the living room also. The heated deck has a gas BBQ, bistro table and chairs and a private 2 person hot tub. The Master bedroom has a Queen Bed, 15" flat panel TV/DVD/CD and walk-in closet along with full views of Bald Mountain. The bathroom is located across the hall from the Master bedroom and has a sunken, jetted tub with shower and travertine tiled floors and countertops. There is a den/guest bedroom off the kitchen that has a Queen bed that can accommodate two guests. The unit sleeps six with a queen sofa sleeper for extra guests.There are lockers at the base of the Mt to store your skis and boots so you can hop on the free shuttle bus or take a stroll over to the River Run side of Baldy. The bike path runs north for 10 miles and south for 16 miles along the Big Wood River with great scenery to take in as you ride or walk. It is groomed in the winter for Nordic Skiing and is also available to ski on to get to the lifts. All you need to bring for your vacation with us in Sun Valley is a change of clothes and to go grocery shopping when you get here. Please bring a hair dryer as most of our condos do not have them. All linens are provided for you and we supply soap for the bath and kitchen as well as towels.

We walked into the Golden Saddle (#7) and were shocked.............
We found our way to the Golden Saddle with good directions from Cindi....she wasn't kidding when she said that it is almost at the end of the road, and when you think you have gone too far, keep going! But, when we walked into the Golden Saddle, we were shocked! This house is so unbelievably gorgeous! The most striking buildings in Flora is its school. The last of three schools to hold classes in town, the structure towers
over the rest of the community. Built in 1916, The Flora School served
as a magnet school for much of the North End, and drew students from Arko, Lost Prairie, and Paradise districts, to name a few.
Upon completion, the school was considered the best proportioned and supplied in the entire county. It was the scene of many
dances, Christmas pagents, and plays during its nearly sixty years of service. The building was added to the
National Historic
Register and is currently being restored by Vanessa Thompson and her family.

Loved our stay at cabin #46. What a beautiful cozy well kept cabin. My family and I had so much fun here playing game, doing crafts, and relaxing. We were able to see the gondola running up and down the mountain side, while taking in the views of the river right outside our kitchen window. Mornings were spent drinking coffee on the huge back deck with the visiting deer from time to time. We've stay in many cabins here at Wallowa Lake but none compare to this treasure. We just pack our clothes and food, cuz this cabin is very well stocked. We loved the washer dryer, and dish washer, all the comfort of home. There are so many activities to do, fishing, biking, hiking, miniature golf, and shopping. Don't miss a trip up the gondola the food up on top is great and the view is even better. We will definitely be back to stay again. Many thanks to Wallowa Lake vacation rentals for making our stay so easy and comfortable. Superbowl parties, the end of the tax prep, and Winter Fishtrap!
Yep, those are all 3 very different things to think about, I realize!
I was teased this week about watching the Superbowl, but I have gotten to where I enjoy watching the games. We sometimes watch it with friends or family that live in Enterprise or Joseph but this year, we are going low key and just watching it at home. Incase you were wondering, I am hoping that the Colts win!
Year end accounting is done, tax info is off to the accountant, and that leaves me thinking of a vacation......Where would I go? When could I go? Then, it dawned on me--why not get a group of my girlfriends together and leave the husbands and kids at home, and go and spend a night at beautiful Wallowa Lake! Maybe indulge ourselves with manicures, massages? Most importantly, though, is just to spend time with them! In the hustle and bustle of life, see if you can squeeze in a few more moments with those that you love.... we'd love to help arrange for your own girls weekend, (or a guys weekend with expanded cable for your sports weekend!!). Interested in scrapbooking? We have homes with plenty of room for your large group to spread out and scrapbook! If you find the reason, I can help find the perfect house!

Our stay at Wallowa Lake was unbelievable!! We were all are so glad that we had the chance to stay in the Rams Head Cottage. This cottage is a home that you can call home for yourself. What we liked the most about the Rams Head Cottage is how when you open all the windows your hear all that Wallowa Lake has instore, as well as the flow of the Wallowa River and the great smell of pine. Girls Weekend
I had the opportunity to spend a night up at Wallowa Lake last weekend with some of my best girlfriends that I have known for basically my whole life. What a fantastic weekend we had laughing about the days of high school, discussing our current lives which are wrapped around kids, family, jobs, etc., and where we were headed for in the future with politics, kids growing up, jobs, etc. I think we truly touched on about everything on the spectrum of life, and it occurred to me how truly lucky I am to have these girlfriends in my life.
We stayed at the Ruby Peak Haven home and really got a full appreciation for what a great winter we have had so far! The trip up to the house was easily done in a 4x4 vehicle, and as we climbed up the mountain to the house, we were impressed with the quantity of snow. There has to be 3-4 feet of snow up there! We keep the road and driveway plowed so we always have access to the house, and where the snow has been piled for containment, it is probably 6 feet tall! The trees have a heavy layer of snow on them, and the roof has probably 2 feet of snow on it as well. It truly is a winter wonderland up there!
Our day was spent mostly playing games, eating, enjoying a few cocktails, watching a movie, going for walks, taking pictures, and a quick snowball fight before the ones that started the fight dashed into the house for their protection. The Ruby Peak Haven house fit our needs perfectly! There was plenty of room for all of us to stretch out, but also plenty of sleeping area as well. Each of us had our own bed, and plenty of space to do our own thing.
On the drive home from Wallowa Lake, I thought about how truly fortunate I am. I live in Wallowa County, have a great husband, 2 children that I adore, great family and friends and a job that I truly enjoy. I am blessed. It really was a fantastic weekend!
