The Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) was created to administer long-term services and supports for people who are aging and who have cognitive and physical disabilities. DADS also licenses and regulates providers of these services, and administers the state’s guardianship program. DADS began formal operations on Sept. 1, 2004.
Several openings available! Nurse II performs routine nursing work in Lubbock, Texas. Work involves providing for the assessment, care and treatment of patients. May train others. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Key responsibilities: Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or the Nurse Case Manager. The Unit RN II may assign nursing responsibilities to the Unit LVN in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act. The responsibility of the Unit RN is to provide for and supervise the professional nursing care of the individuals who reside in a state school setting.
The Unit RN is available to unit personnel to make nursing decisions on a 24-hour basis. She/he is a member of the professional team and shares responsibility with other team members for the development of the individual’s program. Work involves communication skills, i.e. relaying information to other team members, physicians, nurses; data entry, documentation, completing reports, maintaining personnel records, supervisory duties, and following all facility rules/policies.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs health assessments; Quarterly nursing assessments, Acute and chronic health problems, Discharge Planning, Nursing Assessment and Care Screening.
- Administers medication/treatments. Coordinates Nursing Health Care services with other disciplines.
- Coordinates clinics, schedules individuals in appropriate clinics, assures clinics are staffed appropriately, informs physician of changes in individual, and communicates effectively Types reports, assessments, communications using PC, required software and established formats, i.e., Nursing Assessment and Care Screening, Quarterly Assessments, evaluations/position descriptions, communications.
- Provides personnel management to subordinate nursing staff. Interview/hires competent nursing staff, facilitates personnel matters, delegates work assignments, and evaluates employees performance.
- Complies with all State/Federal/Local standards; Facility Policy, ICF Standards, and Texas Nurse Practice Act. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
- Must be registered as a Registered Nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Knowledge Skills Abilities
- Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; of health care laws and regulations; of medical diagnoses and procedures; of accepted medical treatment patterns; of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures; of program regulations and procedures.
- Ability to provide patient care, to prepare and maintain records, to explain public health law, and to train others.
- Ability to appropriately interact with individuals with developmental disabilities and staff members.
- Ability to coordinate on-going health care during routine daily activities or during special activities.
- Ability to calculate mathematical dosages of medications.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment, i.e., CPR.
- Ability to assess and care of residents and/or staff members in emergency situations.
- Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely utilizing English in both written and oral communications.
- Must be registered as a Registered Nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Initial Screening Criteria
- Licensed through the TSBNE as an RN or a new graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse nursing program.

- Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
